Do What You're Told
I would imagine that at some point in your life, you have heard this little phrase, "just do what you're told." Maybe you heard them from a parent, a teacher, or a boss. What you may not have realized was that it was biblical. It's part of a simple reminder to respect authority, pay attention and be obedient which is found in Colossians 3:22-25 MSG:
Servants, do what you’re told by your earthly masters. And
don’t just do the minimum that will get you by. Do your best. Work from the
heart for your real Master, for God, confident that you’ll get paid in full
when you come into your inheritance. Keep in mind always that the ultimate
Master you’re serving is Christ. The sullen servant who does shoddy work will
be held responsible. Being a follower of Jesus doesn’t cover up bad work.
Earthly masters are those that the Lord has placed over you throughout your life. Not people that Lord their power over you but rather the people that have been made responsible for you and your actions. We need to stop with the "you're not the boss of me" attitude and play nice. Being respectful and obedient is just part of it. Not doing just the minimum to get by is another. When you work or do things for others, pour ALL of yourself into the project. Work from the heart not for the check or the accolades. When you do whatever you do as if you were doing it for the Lord, a new confidence will rise up in you and the joy that comes from being a Christ follower will overwhelm you.
So as you start this week, get after it. Pay attention and listen the the instructions and then go the extra mile. Let me tell you what to do right now...make today ridiculously amazing!
