Illiterate Regarding Life

People knew God perfectly well, but when they didn't treat him like God, refusing to worship him, they trivialized themselves into silliness and confusion so that there was neither sense nor direction left in their lives. They pretended to know it all, but were illiterate regarding life. They traded the glory of God who holds the whole world in his hands for cheap figurines you can buy at any roadside stand.
As I read these words this morning out of Romans 1 as a backdrop for the chaos in our world right now, it's clear that many folks are illiterate regarding life. They have exchanged what God desires for them for imitations. Trading the genuine word of God for man's opinions and interpretations.
From the burning of the Koran to the placement of the Mosque at Ground Zero, religious people of all faiths have many opinions. Christ made it clear that whenever we got involved with a difficulty, we should be peace-makers, not peace-breakers. The farther we get away from God, the sillier we become. That silliness can grow into confusion and then we lose all sense of direction and our ability to use common sense. Common sense doesn't seem so common anymore!
Let's grab ahold of God in all His glory and stop admiring the little figurines that want to distract us. Burning books will never trump reading them. Fighting over territories will never unite people. Perhaps we should all go back and get out our old WWJD bracelets and take that thought to heart: what WOULD Jesus do? It's time to stop being illiterate and start reading again. The Bible is the blueprint for building a successful life, marriage, business and family. Isn't it time we got back to the plans of The Architect?
