Second-Fiddle
Mark:1The beginning of the gospel
about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2It is written in Isaiah the prophet:
"I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way"[b]—
3"a voice of one calling in the desert,
'Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.'
These words spoke of the ministry of John the Baptist. His mission-get the people ready for the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ the Anointed One. All of his energies and efforts were being put into play for someone else. He was the "man behind the curtain", the "voice from the sidelines", the "armor-bearer". He was never THE man, he was the man preparing the way for THE man.
John chose the stick to his calling and we never see anything in him about wanting more of the spotlight or more fame for himself. He was as they say, "sold out the whole route."
His ministry was perhaps the shortest of all those we read about in scripture-six months. Six months of significance...multitudes baptized and repenting. His impact goes on forever. Every time a person asks Jesus to live in their heart, I am certain John smiles knowing that he had a part in the new life transformation.
Are you a second-fiddle person? Don't fret, just stay faithful and consistent. Remember when God had called David to stand in the #1 position? First he had to prove himself faithful in the second-fiddle role. David was exemplary in the second fiddle role—especially since the first fiddle kept trying to kill him! David trusted God and in time he was promoted to first chair!
John the Baptist changed the world in six months! It's not too late...you're not too old! Wherever you play, play with all your heart and let God make a beautiful symphony with you!
