Luke 2:8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." 16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
I want to help us answer the question…how can we have a Mary Christmas?
This was an awesome time for Mary. And Mary was pretty amazing herself! She had been chosen…not just picked to be a player…she was chosen to carry the savior of the world in her womb for a nine month period. She had been in the presence of the angel of God, telling her these words from Luke 1:28: “greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you!” Literally!!!!
She was somewhat “frightened” by these words as she was unsure just what “highly favored’ meant. It was then that the angel continued…
“Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end”.
Now Mary was in a relationship, just not THAT kind of relationship so this news was a bit unsettling. The explanation that the angel gave did not bring much more help…’The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.” The angel went on to say, even your relative, Elizabeth, she’s going to have a child too. She thinks that she is barren but I tell you that she is already 6 months pregnant! Nothing is impossible with God! So let’s start right there…
To have a M-A-R-Y Christmas you have to hear that…nothing is impossible with God. NO THING is impossible with God. We live in a culture where people do their own things and many times people get hurt. We have homicides, burglaries, abuse, domestic violence all of which are serious. We also have spouses that are not in fellowship with Christ, bosses that verbally abuse us and make us feel small, and friends that somehow seem to throw water on our dreams just when they start to catch fire. No Thing is impossible with God. The key in that sentence lies in the last two words…WITH GOD.
If you want to have a MARY Christmas you have to start thinking differently. You need to start believing in God and what’s more, you need to start believing in yourself. Nothing is impossible with God!
