What Does a Real Successful Leader Look Like? Pt 3

We have been discovering some of the characteristics of a real successful leader from the story of David and Ziklag in 1 Samuel 30. Today we finish this thought by recapping what we know so far...
a real, successful leader will be vulnerable…authentic…self-motivated and faith driven: all great things to see in those that you follow.

Here's another one you will find;

#4 Prayerful
Real successful leaders are prayerful…their lives are full of prayer. They know how to find strength AND tap into it. Let me say it like this:
its one thing to find strength and another thing totally when strength finds you. Prayer is the activator…the connector to the conduit by which the divine intel from God can be downloaded.

Read verses 7-17 of 1 Samuel 30:
Then David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelek, “Bring me the ephod.” Abiathar brought it to him, and David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?”
“Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue.”
David and the six hundred men with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. 10 Two hundred of them were too exhausted to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit.
11 They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat— 12 part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived, for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.
13 David asked him, “Who do you belong to? Where do you come from?”
He said, “I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. 14 We raided the Negev of the Kerethites, some territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb. And we burned Ziklag.”
15 David asked him, “Can you lead me down to this raiding party?”
He answered, “Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to them.”
16 He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and reveling because of the great amount of plunder they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah. 17 David fought them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled.

David asked the Lord about specifics: should I pursue…will I win…is this what you want God? Many of our own difficulties could be by-passed if we would take a moment to pass it by the Lord and inquire of His purpose and plan in what is going on around us.

Let’s recap: real successful leaders are completely vulnerable. They are genuine, authentic, self-motivated and driven by great faith in a personal God. They find strength through a life filled with prayer. All of this leads them to rise from the ashes…walk through the valleys and settle above the circumstances.  The end result of “pulling this together” is…

#5 David recovered all.
Say that out loud DAVID RECOVERED ALL. How much did he recover? ALL! Every single thing that was lost was found! Amen!
To recover is to return to the normal state of health, mind and strength. It’s as if none of the bad things ever even happened.

Some of us have had moments or maybe are in that moment now when we are finding it hard to believe that life could ever be normal again. You may be weeping uncontrollably. Your spirit may be riddled with anxiety and despair. You may be find yourself in the place where all you can think about is what’s no longer there. How about taking some counsel from a person like David… a man after God’s own heart? Stop waiting on the pastor to encourage you. Don’t count on the worship team to bring you out of the pit. Encourage yourself in the Lord. Find strength there. If you lack the wisdom for the situation…ask God for it.  God pours out wisdom liberally.

The story is great if we stopped right there but let me throw a bonus point in…one more character trait of a great leader...

#6 share the victories
Real successful leadership includes others.Your story of His strength empowering you through the darkness and despair is so beneficial to others and will be used to build His kingdom even more.
Read verses 21-25
21 Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were. 22 But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, “Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.”
23 David replied, “No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. 24 Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.” 25 David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.

Some of David’s men didn’t even participate in the battle but they were invited to participate in the spoils. God will preserve, protect and provide for ALL our needs. He heals you so you can become a change agent to heal others. He blesses you so that you can be generous and bless others. He designed you to be a follower of Him and a leader of this world.

Vulnerable, authentic, self-motivated and faith-driven, prayerful, generous…
This is what the real successful leader looks like. And its how YOU should look too:)
