Commit to Character
There are many times in our lives when we look for people: people to work with, people to start a business with, even people to grow old with. Most companies looking for top level employees hire "head hunters" to find them the most qualified person for the job. I am not sure what the criteria are that these types of folks use but I do know that the most important thing to the Lord is our character and not our talent. That has never been more prevalent than in today's culture where companies are crumbling because of CEO took the money. Marriages are ending because a spouse was unfaithful. Churches close because a leader has gone off course. Character is being challenged every day.Character is who you are when no one is looking. It's the mixture of your personality, your faith and your heart. Character is fine tuned over time and it says more about you than your talent. So if you are going to choose to engage with people in the work, faith or personal arena's of life, choose the reliable and faithful ones.
In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul is helping a young preacher by the name of Timothy build up a staff and some lifelong relationships. Young Timothy was in a situation where discernment and discretion would meet determination and discipline. And Paul told him...
"And the [instructions] which you have heard from me along with many witnesses, transmit and entrust [as a deposit] to reliable and faithful men who will be competent and qualified to teach others also."
One translation says to commit to faithful men. Faithfulness is a part of your character, not your talent. And what Paul was telling us is that we should look for faithful people, folks that are able to be relied upon. These types of people can learn how to do anything and do it with competence and even teach others as well! Surround yourself with these types of people and you can build businesses, churches and mutually beneficial lifelong relationships.
