Do You Hear What I Hear?
Are we REALLY listening? Do we really hear that well? I was talking to a friend the other day about the way I used to sing songs as a kid. I would sing lyrics at the top of my voice in my car and many times, those were not even the lyrics. Example, Frankie Valli used to sing a song that went like this..."my eyes adored you, no one ever laid a hand on you, my eyes adored you..." But not when I sang it. I would sing, "while I was in Georgia, no one ever laid a hand on you while I was in Georgia."! What? That didn't even make sense! But it was what I thought I heard. Then my friend told me of one of his songs. Prince's Raspberry Beret did not sound like that for him. He was hearing "grass ferry parade"!
Maybe that Christmas song posed a great question..."Do You Hear What I Hear?" We all seem to hear differently and we must always be cautious to make certain that we are really listening with ears of understanding. Maybe this trouble we have with lyrics is why we are so good at gossip. Many times we pass on things that aren't even accurate but it's what we thought we heard.
How well do you hear? Before you move away from the Cup of Joe today, will you share one of your own misunderstood lyrics? I would love answer that question, do you hear what I hear?
