Recipe for a Perfect Thanksgiving
It’s hard to believe that in a little over a month we will be celebrating Christmas! The sounds and smells of the season are all around us and the city is buzzin’ with activity. You are probably putting the finishing touches on your Thanksgiving plans and getting excited about sitting around that table with friends and family and eating more than you normally do at one meal. My most memorable Thanksgiving came years ago when I visited a little town in Oklahoma called Sasakwa. The families were crammed into a tiny house that was heated to about 95 degrees because it was below 30 outside. It was so hot in the house that the pies had to be set on the porch outside to keep the meringue from melting! It was awesome! And then it happened. Something that had never happened before that day and has never happened again in my life. The women in the house called the guys to come in and eat dinner while they served all that the men wanted and needed! There were NO ladies at the table. Just the men. I thought…Lord is this Thanksgiving heaven? (just kidding) After we finished eating the ladies cleared our places and we were excused to go in and watch football and fall asleep. I was so astonished that I did not sleep but rather peeked back in to the table to see a table full of women taking their turn and eating. I will never forget that Thanksgiving.
I was thinking about the Recipe for the Perfect Thanksgiving. How can we enjoy what is most important about this season. It has nothing to do with turkeys (though I’ve met a few!) and nothing to do with the stuffing and the pies. It’s in the bible in the book of 1 Thessalonians Chapter 5 and verses 16-18. So get out your 3 X 5 recipe cards and get ready to cook up this life changing feast.
Of course you need to start with a deep dish pan of FAITH. Without faith it is impossible to please God. Though it only takes faith the size of a mustard seed to move mountains, you want to make sure that none of it spills out. Tie on that apron that says “Born to Give Thanks!” and get ready!
Add in a cup of JOY. That’s right rejoice and get happy about it! This is the season to be grateful that you have your life, your family your friends and your church. “Be joyful always” and in ALL WAYS! The best way that I have found to get happy is to make someone else happy. JOY is contagious. Have you ever noticed that when someone really laughs, you can’t help but to laugh too! So go ahead and laugh at those troubles and that crazy Uncle Fred! He is that way because God made him different and you’ve got to enjoy that God has a sense of humor!
Tomorrow we continue...go ahead and preheat the oven!
